Ilissos

Ilissos

Wiktor Mastela

The composition Ilissos draws inspiration from the once vibrant river that flowed through Athens, a place of memory and continuity gradually buried beneath the weight of urban expansion. Processed recordings of water emerge and dissolve into layers of city noise, forming a sonic topography where nature and human intervention collide.

The piece traces a cycle: from the clarity of flowing water, to its gradual suffocation, until it disappears under concrete and asphalt. Ilissos becomes both a reminder of the river’s hidden history and a reflection on how the urban landscape erases its natural origins.

This work stands as a sonic monument to water silenced — and an invitation to listen again to what is fading, before it vanishes completely.
