I run 414f4e42, a longitudinal acoustic ecology study, recorded entirely within one site, my own cottage garden in the Quantock Hills, Somerset. Each session is captured at a different position within the garden, focusing on the species present each time, at changing times of day. I use a soil probe, bark contact mic, and ambient stereo pair. The recordings are forensically analysed using project-specific software that I have designed and coded myself: chroma, drones, harmonic structure, transients etc. The project weaves the raw data with botanical and folkloric research on the target species for each session.

The findings are used to inform the composition that I create to accompany each log. The open question I am investigating is whether a single small site, returned to repeatedly over a long period, has its own tonal character, something that holds steady underneath whatever’s growing or moving through it at the time. So far there’s a recurring chromatic cluster turning up across sessions that I’m still trying to understand. Will the tonality of the site change with the seasons?
