In resonance with the thematic and geographical context of our upcoming event in Gdańsk, we invite you to listen to the new assemblage of audio works from CENSE community and our affiliates. The Baltic Sea was known as the Mare Suebicum or Mare Sarmaticum at the time of the Roman Empire. It is 12 000 years old and is bounded by the Scandinavian Peninsula, the mainland of Northern Europe, Eastern Europe and Central Europe, and the Danish islands. It drains into the Kattegat by way of the Öresund, the Great Belt and the Little Belt, continues through the Skagerrak into the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.Today, the Baltic Sea is widely considered one of the most threatened seas in the world. This is due to its shallow, nearly enclosed basin, which traps pollution for decades, combined with heavy nutrient runoff from farming that fuels algae blooms and vast oxygen-depleted dead zones. Warming waters and the growing risk of an oil spill from Russia’s aging shadow fleet tankers add further pressure on an ecosystem that is already struggling to recover.
