World Forum for Acoustic Ecology 2023: Pre-conference Panel at Stetson University

As part of the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology 2023 Conference: Listening Pasts – Listening Futures, the Atlantic Center for the Arts (ACA), Stetson University and the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology (WFAE) presented a free, public panel discussion with writer/biologist David Haskell, sound/performance artist Amanda Gutiérrez, artist/podcaster Claude Schryer, and artist/researcher Jacek Smolicki.

Acoustic ecology, also called soundscape studies, is a discipline studying the relationship, mediated through sound, between human beings and their environment. Stetson University and ACA continues its local work centered around the environment and are proud to announce a collaborative partnership with the WFAE. The Listening Pasts – Listening Futures conference marks the 30th anniversary of the founding of WFAE and will be the first international conference on environmental sound studies in the United States.

The event brought together the three conference keynote speakers – Amanda Gutiérrez, David George Haskell, and Claude Schryer – alongside sound artist Jacek Smolicki, for a conversation about soundscapes, covering interdisciplinary topics including noise pollution, bioacoustics, and environmental responsibility.

The event was moderated by Dr. Nathan Wolek, Professor of Digital Arts and Music Technology at Stetson University.

This event was made possible through generous support from the James Turner Butler Creative Lectureship. WFAE also acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts for the participation of Claude Schryer.
